Subject: Dropping Etiquette

Is there an established etiquette for the dropping of pieces during
a game?  Is it considered bad form to drop without putting your
opponent into check?  Is it considered a show of finesse to put off
dropping as long as possible?  Or is it pretty much a free-for-all?
I was just curious about this.
