From: ATKINSON ROMA1 INFN IT Date: 1 feb 1993 Subject: Shogi terms Sente=black, gote=white? Really? Even when white has sente? "Better Moves for Better Shogi" has a reasonably gobsmacking list of terms with pronunciation, kanji and translation. Some backnumbers of the Hodges magazine contain lists of terms too, including handy ones like "potato style", useful for describing one's own standard of play (unless one is Reijer or Pieter, of course). One of the Japanese people who came to play with me at Castel Sant'Angelo always used to say "insegnami" before games, and when he wanted me to show him the answer to a Tsume-Shogi he couldn't do. "insegnami" is the Italian polite imperative "teach me". (Actually, I tend to avoid using the polite form of the imperative since if I am being polite to someone, it is probably better to avoid giving orders. More reasonable to say things like "Could you open that window, please?" than "open that window!", polite form or not. Adam Atkinson, Rome
