From: Howard Wachtel UICVM BITNET> Date: 26 dec 1993 Subject: Stalemate in Shogi? At our Shogi club, one of the members tries to introduce a beginner to the game by playing with only his King against the entire army of pieces for the beginner (or only the back rank pieces). (He often wins by taking a few of the beginner's pieces and mating him.) A distinct possibility in this situation would be that the beginner could "stalemate" the lone King of the experienced player. That is, the King is not in check but has no legal moves as it would be in check wherever it tried to move. What would be the outcome of such a game? A draw as in chess? ________________________________________________________________ Howard K. Wachtel University of Illinois at Chicago Howard.Wachtel uic edu or U13054 UICVM CC UIC EDU
