From: Alan Sawyer EMBL-HEIDELBERG DE> Date: 20 oct 1992 Subject: Re: Gradara Report (forwarded posting from Adam Atkinson) Dear Adam, It was very interesting to receive your mail about your single-handed attempts to convert the heathens to a civilised game. John Kenney and I along with Pieter Stouten and others have recently organized the EMBL Shogi workshop, which boasted four ex-european champions and a 5-dan Japanese professional Mr. Iida. A report of this will soon appear on Shogi-L. One thing that we are using to convert chess players is an article by one of the best German players, Gerald Hertneck, in which he extols the virtues of shogi for chess players, maybe we can send you the article and you can translat it and use it yourself. We even managed to convert a German chess correspondant with this article, and he is now pretty enthusiastic. John and I are considering coming down to Rome soon and we wanted to get in touch with you so your phone number has come at the right time. If you are serious about playing some high profile shogi then we would be happy to oblige. I am rated at 11-kyu, and John is about 2-kyu I believe, so we should be able to generate some serious opposition for your stong player. Incidentally, why don't you play some handicap games, that would be a challenge for him. Have fun. Alan Sawyer (Shogi EMBL)
