From: John Kenney EMBL-HEIDELBERG DE> Date: 7 dec 1992 Subject: Re: checkmating or capturing and the shogi-l board Bob Diertens asked: >1) Is it allowed to leave a check on the King? Yes, but if your King is captured then you lose. >2) Is the game won by checkmating or by capturing the opponent's King? Checkmate is considered to be sufficient to win the game, but during play a King may be in check without either player noticing (for several moves!) and so may be captured to end the game. Perhaps someone could comment on what the professional rules are concerning the offical end of the game. >3) How are pieces in hand notated on the shogi-l board? >Is this done in this way: > +------------------+ > |2G 4P R | > | | > +------------------+ >or in this way: > +------------------+ > |GG PPPP R | > | | > +------------------+ Either is clear. The use of the Shogi-L board is for convenience and there are no strict rules which apply. It is only necessary that both players agree to its use and interpertation. >4)Linecrossings on the shogi-l board are done in this way: > | | > ----------- > | | >Isn't it nicer int his way: > | | > --+----+--- > | | The latter appears better to me. I've seen both. It seems to be a matter of preference. John (Kenney EMBL-Heidelberg DE)
