From: atkinson VAXROM CERN CH Date: 26 sep 1991 Subject: Is there anyone out there? Is there anyone out there? I seem to have been almost the only person on SHOGI-L for months, and I don't even get sent copies of my own messages. Is there a reason for all this silence? I have read slightly different things about time controls in different places. Can someone perhaps clarify them for me. Things I have read/seen: friendly play in West and Japan is without clocks tournament play in West with normal chess clocks, and byoyomi when flag falls (This I have seen, so I know it is true...) tournament play in Japan less clear. (i) only whole minutes counted from "clock" time, so 59 seconds counts as no time used. When all time has gone, go into byoyomi. (So whole minute rule no longer valid when no time is left, or would byoyomi be one minute in this case?) (ii) Another source suggested that the first x seconds used in each move didn't count (eg 1 minute?) but after that everything did. Byoyomi at the end as usual. Again, could the free time at the beginning of each move be different from byoyomi? (iii) Both of the above wrong. If so, what? I have had a letter about my "appearance" in the Italian chess magazine Torre e Cavallo, and 6 people came to look for me last week (and another 2 so far this week) expressing curiosity about the rather vague posters I have put up all over the place mentioning my willingness to play "traditional games from other countries which are not widely diffused in Italy - e.g. Shogi, Go (Wei Chi), XiangQi, Wari...". Not explaining what the games are seems to work... Anyway, some people are requesting supplements to my current handouts which explain the rules and nothing else. SO...I want to do "Shogi handout 2" which will explain handicaps, rankings, time controls in tournaments etc. I don't THINK touch-move is used in Shogi, for instance - certainly I have read somewhere that players often fiddle with pieces in hand. Does anyone know the address of the GO list? Adam Atkinson Rome The Gradara games festival is the first weekend in October. Anyone want to come? There will be Shogi, Go, XiangQi and Wari (Awele, Awari, Mancala call it what you will) in profusion, amongst other things.
