From: Pieter Stouten EMBL BITNET> Date: 14 nov 1991 Subject: Spearing the Sparrow "Spearing the Sparrow" is an attack from a position as given below. The positions of the pieces that are not shown (specifically silver and bishop) are very important in actual games but not for the principle. In general "Spearing the Sparrow" can be played when both sides play yagura (static rook with a castle as white has). In the complete yagura white's silver is not on 2d but on 3c. However, when the knight advances to 2e (or threatens to do it) the silver comes out. 4 3 2 1 --------------------+ | | | wN | wL | a --------------------+ | | wG | wK | | b --------------------+ | wG | | wP | wP | c --------------------+ | wP | wP | wS | | d --------------------+ | | | bN | bP | e --------------------+ | | bP | bp | | f --------------------+ | bP | | | bL | g --------------------+ | | | | bR | h --------------------+ | | | | | i --------------------+ The pawns on the edge file can be positioned as shown or on 1f and 1d, respectively. In some cases where white sees the attack coming he occupies 2b with a gold instead of castling there. If anybody wants to know how to continue from this position, please drop me a note. Pieter Stouten.
