I just talked to one of my Japanese friends about the meaning of shikake. Literally, it means "trick." As to the shogi translation, we think that it means something similar to a fork or a passive attack. Here is an example to better clarify: Say I have a knight in front of my lance, and in front of my lance is your bishop. If I were to move my knight, your bishop would be threatened by my lance, but I did not directly place my lance into a position that would threaten your bishop. I hope that this helps... Phil Miesle
