From: atkinson VAXROM CERN CH Date: 7 aug 1991 Subject: Grading Ok. I might JUST be able to scrape together enough Shogi players in the Rome area for it to be worth worrying about grades. I confess this statement contains a fair amount of optimism, but what the hell. I should be getting some more info on Gradara soon, and that ought to be good, though there will not be many people from Rome there, I expect. Given that even Mr Waketa does not know what grade he is, what should we do? Assume we are ALL 15-kyu to start with and promote people who win too many games for this to be true? Try to work out our relative grades, but give no numbers to them and wait until one or more of us play against people of known grades? Um. I don't know if I mentioned this before, but Ishi Press now has a British address as well. They sent me a catalogue for books, games and puzzles. I phoned in a credit card order for some stuff and they said "We'll send it this afternoon." Gosh. Applying the Italian post modifier to this, it could arrive by October. There is a reference in their normal catalogue to a "Japanese books catalogue". I have asked for a copy of this. Does anyone out there know how extensive this catalogue is? Is it mostly/entirely Go? They have some Shogi Nenkans for about 27 pounds each.
