From: Pieter Stouten EMBL BITNET> Date: 26 jun 1990 Subject: New game and news from Japan. The following game is now available from the SHOGI-L archive: Game 13 Arend van Oosten (3-dan ama) - Reijer Grimbergen (3-dan ama): 1-0. 18 Feb 1990. 5-th International Nijmegen tournament. Netherlands. No comment. 81 moves. As usual it can be retrieved by sending a mail/message/file to LISTSERV@TECHNION, containing the line: GET SHOGI GAME13 Two bits of news from Japan. I hope this is interesting to you, Shogi enthousiasts. Probably you don't know yet many of the names of the people who dominate the professional Shogi scene, but I know that sports fans everywhere in the world have their idols, whatever the sport is, so why should Shogi be any different. In the games in the archive already several absolute top players were introduced to you: Nakahara Makoto, Aono Teruichi, Futakami Tatsuya, Oyama Yasuharu, Naito Kunio, Ouchi Neboyuki, Yonenaga Kunio and the young stars: Habu Yoshiharu and Tanigawa Koji. Tanigawa held the 1989 Meijin title (the most prestigious of all) and only had to win the title one more time in order to become "Lifetime Meijin". However, the challenger Nakahara, who is already lifetime Meijin for quite some time, regained his title and beat Nakahara with 4-2. The second bit may be more interested to you, computer freaks. Probably in October 1990 the Computer Shogi Championship will be held, which at least should make clear which programs are available and how strong they are. One of the contestants of this Championship will be Mr. Iida (5-dan Shogi professional and author of a Shogi program) who invites everybody, who wants to write or obtain Shogi programs or who has some ideas with respect to writing them, to contact him at: Nihon Shogi Renmei (attn. Mr. Hiroyuki Iida), 2-39-9 Sendagaya, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, Japan. Cheers, Pieter Stouten stouten embl bitnet
