From: Chris Sterritt ADMS-RAD UNISYS COM> Date: 9 jun 1990 Subject: Shogi Rules Hi JRP, Welcome to the list! Glad you're here, and posting. I'll include our shogi rules below, and thanks for telling us you got nothing from LIstserv. Our man at that end (Al Hartshorn) will no doubt fix it. In the mean time, most of us are pretty rank amateurs, so feel free to ask any questions or post anything -- we're glad to have discussion, since it makes us all better. Speaking of playing games by email (well, we weren't, but what the hey! :-) would you like to join the ladder? It's just friendly competition to see who ranks among whom, and to make us all better players. As to programs, so far there doesn't seem to be any public domain code available (ala GNU Chess), so it seems to be up to us to write it! I put together a hypercard stack (for the Macintosh, obviously) that just does (almost) everything to moderate a game between two humans; I'm going to be working on a 'real' program that does the same, allowing saving games, adding commentary to games, etc. THEN I can get around to writing the code that will actually play! I've written most of a chess program, and have read several books on intelligent game design, so if you've got millions of dollars just lying around why don't you fund me to write it? :-) :-) :-) :-). ta ta for now, chris sterritt
