From: ATKINSON%VAXROM.decnet.CERN CERNVAX BITNET Date: 30 jul 1990 Subject: RE: Tsume Shogi Thanks for the observation that useless moves can be ignored in Tsume- Shogi. I agree that doing Tsume-Shogi is great fun, though for me a 3-mover takes up to 5 minutes and a 5-mover often (50% of the time?) defeats me totally. Sometimes I find that perversity is part of te solution, which I suppose is ok if it doesn't happen too often since you need to be prepared to sacrifice amazing numbers of pieces to get mates. I don't think perversity is always a characteristic of Tsume-Shogi problems, though. Would Mr Grimbergen care to suggest good ways to get these books? I appreciate that writing to Japan may cost rather less, but going to one's local Japanese bookshop is much more convenient, and allows one to see which books are available. Mr Mazura was a fan of Tsume-Shogi Paradise. Does Mr Grimbergen know this one, and if so, what does he think of it? It seemed to me to have problems that were FAR too long for the likes of me (20-50 moves, on the whole). Do dan-players really spot mate in 30 moves over the board? In a sense, I hope not...
