From: Klaus Blumberg DBSTU1 BITNET> Date: 24 jul 1990 Subject: Disclaimer hello, in his answer to my (privately send) query to Reijer Grimbergen concerning some points on his excellent exposure of the major Japanese Shogi-titles Reijer points out: >All in all, it must become clear that knock out is the main tournament >system for Shogi. Amateur Shogi consists almost entirely of knock-out >tournaments without a second chance. The question by Klaus about second >chances and the discussions about the Dutch Shogi Championship (which >will be a knock-out without second chance starting 1991) show that it >is very difficult for westerners to view knock-out as a fair tournament >system to decide the winner. I think, coming from Go to Shogi, that knockout is as good system to decide a winner as any other and is part of Shogido (the way of shogi). But being used to Go-(pro-)tournaments, or better: reporting about such, I wondered whether the use of a loser's section in ko-system is as usual in Shogi as in Go. The same question would have applied to qualification within leagues (as for the Osho), but those had been answered. So it's not really 'westerners' feelings that caused the question. but let that pass :-). I want to thank Reijer for his really informative article(s) about the pro's tournaments in Japan. Hopefully will this stream of information keep up (not necessarily from Reijer only) to make it easier to give newcomers and the interested public a general description of shogi. That can only serve the game. Klaus Blumberg, I0060301 DBSTU1 Bitnet 'Disregard the disturbance: here I am.'
