From: Pieter Stouten EMBL BITNET> Date: 14 aug 1990 Subject: East meets West Shogi Tournament in Germany (29/30 Sep 1990). Hi Shogi Fans, I am back and found my electronic mailbox busted with Shogi mails. Good. Only, I managed to clobber the mail file, so my reaction to many of your mails (sorry Chris, Al (Robert), Reijer, Klaus and others ...) will have to wait until I have recovered it. * Another thing is that on September 29/30 the first EAST MEETS WEST Shogi tournament will take place in Heidelberg, West Germany. That is East in the sense of Eastern Europe, not Asia, although everybody is welcome. The primary goal of the tournament is to provide a possibility to play Shogi in a pleasant, not-really-competitive atmosphere and to make new (Shogi) aquaintances. * There is no sponsorship and no entry fee. In principle, players are accomodated for three nights (Fri 28, Sat 29, Sun 30) by John Kenney and me So, the only costs arise from travelling the small distance to Heidelberg. * Because of the expected differences in strength the tournament will be a handicap event. Probably it will be divided in two parts. The first day will be some sort of a ladder event with reduced time limits in order to determine the strength of players. This is necessary, because several participants have only been engaged in postal Shogi, as yet. The second day will be a handicap Swiss tournament, again with reduced time limits. * Most likely, at the end of the day, the first General Meeting of the German Shogi Association will be held. * If you like to attend, please let me know as soon as possible. * Sorry, non-Europeans, to bother you with this info. Sorry, Dutchmen, that the tournament coincides with the Holland-Japan Shogi Meeting, but these dates were our only option. Cheers, Pieter Stouten embl bitnet>
