From: Klaus Blumberg DBSTU1 BITNET> Date: 13 aug 1990 Subject: fairburn: how to play shogi hello, stimulated by the running tsume problem-competition I looked again at the problem section of 'Fairbairn: How to play shogi' (Item 1 in the booklist). I promptly discovered two mistakes. Here are they: 1) Tsume-problem 20: B: +R2d, B1c, N3d i.h.: G W: K3b, G4b, S5b, L2a, P2c and P5c. The last Pawn is the mistake: it HAS to be on 4c, otherwise there is no solution, at least not the one given in the booklet. 2) Brinkmate (Hisshi)-Problem 25: B: +R5a, S3e i.h.: S W: K3b, G4b, N2a, L1a, P1c, P2c, P3c, P4c The proposed solution is 1)S'3a, White has to defend his Gold, and then with the taken Gold u are supposed to get a mate. The mistake here: if u defend the Gold by dropping a Silver on 4a, there is no mate as the supposed starting field for mating (3a) is defended.
